XL Motor

This motor is intended to power Gauge 1 locomotives. Due to its size, it is unlikely to be suitable for Gauge 0 locomotives. The motor can be purchased separately or fitted to a double reduction gear box with a ¼ inch diameter final drive as standard. Gear boxes with Ratios of 25:1 and 33:1 are available. Gear boxes can also be purchased separately and are available to order with a 3/16 inch diameter final drive at no extra cost. Flywheels cannot be fitted to these motors.

JH

The JH is the intermediate motor in the range. It is designed for medium sized locomotives, but can be used in large locomotives where space is at a premium.

The motor can be purchased separately or combined with either a single reduction gearbox or a double reduction gearboxes. The latter units give slightly better control. Gearboxes may also be purchased separately. Flywheels for these units, which are optional extra, are available in two sizes – 22.0 mm or 28.5 mm diameter.

The single reduction gearbox suitable for this motor is available in three ratios, 18:1, 25:1 or 36:1 – the lower the number the faster the locomotive.

The double reduction gearbox suitable for this motor is available in four ratios, 14:1, 19:1(not Gauge1), 25:1 & 33:1 – the lower the number the faster the drive axle revolves.

The JH motor has a  2.0mm shaft, a no load speed of 8,200 rpm (+/- 10%), and a stalled torque 409 gram cm

MT Helical Range

Formerly available from Ron Chaplin, this is a range of helical gearbox units mounted on the Canon EN22 motor. Helical gearboxes are mechanically more efficient than worm drive units, thereby allowing the use of a smaller motor for medium and larger size units where space is at a premium.

In addition to the range available with 3/16” wheel axles, we offer 14:1 and 30:1 two stage units with a ¼” wheel axle for Gauge 1 etc. The 14/1 ratio is very suitable for driving bogies on diesel or electric locomotives.

In addition to four ratios available for a conventionally shaped gearbox intended for steam locomotives, there is one unit that has been specifically designed for diesel and electric locomotives (including EMUs and DMUs). The gearbox has been designed in such a way that a Delrin drive sprocket (not supplied) can be fitted to the driving axle to enable a chain drive unit to be made.

These units are only available complete. A 22.0 mm diameter flywheel is an optional extra on these units.

The gearboxes in this range are available in four ratios, 22:1 2 stage, 30:1 2 stage, 30:1 3 stage or 40:1 3 stage – the lower the number the faster the drive axle revolves – final output speed is dependant on driving wheel diameter.

The ¼” axle version of this unit is  available with 2 stage 14:1 or 30:1 gearboxes.

The gearbox for the diesel drive unit is only available in a 14:1 2 stage ratio.

The Canon motor has a 2.0mm shaft, a no load speed of 7,000 rpm (+/- 10%), and a rated current of 180mA.

Mashima 1833

This is the smallest worm drive motor gearbox unit in our range, powered by the Mashima 1833 motor and is suitable for medium and smaller locomotives. The 40:1 gearbox ratio is particularly suitable for shunting and slow speed operation. Single or double reduction gearboxes are available and both the motor and gearbox can be purchased separately, if required. A 22.0 mm diameter flywheel is an optional extra on these units.

The single reduction gearbox suitable for this motor is available in two ratios, 25:1 or 40:1 – the lower the number the faster the drive axle revolves.

The Mashima motor has a skewed armature, 2.0mm shaft, a no load speed of 8,500 rpm (+/- 10%), and a rated current of 90mA.
