These coaches were introduced in 1931 to offer Transatlantic passengers landing at Plymouth a speedy and luxurious journey to London . Prior to 1931, the GWR had used Pullman cars in Ocean Liner trains from Plymouth and the Super Saloons were certainly the equal of, if not superior, to traditional Pullman vehicles. The Ocean Liner expresses from Plymouth to Paddington continued to run until 1962. The coaches were also used for special trains, private hire and Newbury Race trains.
Eight coaches were built in 1931/32 as follows:-

Each coach provided a large saloon, a small saloon and a private coupe. Meals were prepared in a separate kitchen car in the train formation. In 1935, Nos.9117 & 9118 were rebuilt with catering facilities in place of the small saloon. This variation is not covered by this kit. Names disappeared in BR days.
Fuller details (including drawings and photographs of the vehicles) can be found in the books - “Great Western Coaches (1903-1948)” by J. H. Russell (published by OPC/Ian Allan), and “Great Western Coaches from 1890” by Michael Harris (published by David & Charles 1985). Both contain much useful information.
The MSC Model Kit
The kits represents the eight vehicles as originally built. Parts for a fully detailed interior are provided with both types of armchair. Subsequent alterations – particularly to the windows and window ventilators – are not covered by this kit.
Transfers for the eight original names together with numbers and crests are available separately from MSC Models.
Wheels have not been provided in the kit as there are a number of different standards available in O Gauge. Slaters Plastikard Ltd and Home of O Gauge steel 3' 7" disc wheels are suitable.
