The horseboxes represented by this kit cover vehicles built between 1874 and 1890. Photographs taken during Southern railway days indicate that some vehicles had lamp irons added to them. Although one published drawing shows both quarter lights glazed, photographic evidence indicates these to have been panelled. Some vehicles were also sent to the Isle of Wight by the SR, where hand brakes were fitted.
Further details can be found in the book “Carriage Stock of the LB&SCR” by P J Newbury - Oakwood Press 1976 (now unfortunately out of print, but secondhand copies can be found). An article also appeared on pages 608 - 610 of the December 1989 Model Railways magazine. A number of photographs have been published in the various books relating to the Isle of Wight railways.
The MSC Models Kit
The MSC Models kit enables a vehicle to be built covering both the Stroudley and Billinton periods. The kit can be adapted for other periods by obtaining spare parts from suppliers such as ABS Models (eg. handbrake levers) and Newbold Models (eg. etched lamp irons).
