The two kits these instructions cover are virtually identical, but the fully planked version covers a batch of 20 vehicles built by the Gloucester Carriage & Wagon Company.
The horseboxes represented by these kits cover vehicles built between 1891 and 1906. The principle variations between the various prototypes are as follows:-
a) Pre 1899 vehicles were not hand braked when built and had the long footboard mounted along the lower edge of the solebar;
b) The 1899/1900 (fully planked) vehicles built by the Gloucester Carriage & Wagon Company had a restrainer fitted to the dropdown flap. They also had the footboard raised to the centre line of the exposed depth of the solebar. The official photograph shows a handbrake fitted, but the General Arrangement diagram omits this item;
c) The post 1900 vehicles retained the raised footboard but had no restrainer. They were also handbrake fitted.
Further details can be found in the book “Carriage Stock of the LB&SCR” by P J Newbury - Oakwood Press 1976 (now unfortunately out of print, but secondhand copies can be found).
The MSC Models Kit
The MSC Models kit enables vehicles to be built covering all the variations, and care must be taken to select which type is required before construction commences.
